The museum sponsors paleontological and archaeological excavations in addition to other extensive research projects.  Dr. Carl Baugh, the museum’s Founder and Director, originally came to Glen Rose to critically examine claims of human and dinosaur co-habitation.  He conducted extensive excavations along the Paluxy River, with appropriate permission of the landowners, only to reveal human footprints among dinosaur footprints.  This discovery prompted Dr. Baugh to realize the importance of this discovery and the need to display its findings in a museum.

The Green Pickle got its name from an old tradition founded in Germany.  You see….in German, pickles are considered good luck.  On Christmas Eve, pickle ornaments are hidden in the Christmas tree for one of the lucky children to find.  Whoever finds this ornament will receive an extra special present from St. Nicholas (better known as Santa Claus here in the good ole US of A)……and will have good luck for one year.  I guarantee you, I’d be looking for the pickle!!!

Dinosaur Valley State Park

Some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world can be seen at the Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose.  There are so many things to do at the park including camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, river swimming, fishing…..not to mention equestrian use, but please remember to bring your own horse!!!

The dinosaur tracks can be found in the river bottom of The Paluxy River which runs directly through the park.  For the avid bird watcher, the park also hosts many species of both resident and migrant birds.  Get out those binoculars and see if you can set your sights on a Golden-Cheek Warbler or a Black-Capped Vireo….and maybe even a wild turkey or two.  If you’re out in the park just taking in the beautiful scenery and hiking, you might also run into a white-tailed deer, opossum, armadillo, rabbit or, heaven forbid; a “country kitty”, better known as a skunk!!!

Glen Rose is lucky enough to have access to two beautiful rivers, the Brazos and Paluxy, which fortunately for us means hours of cool enjoyment. The Brazos River is one of the most popular canoeing and tubing rivers in Texas and offers miles of cool water relaxation. The folks at Low Water Bridge Canoe Rentals offers guests float trips of 3, 7, 10, 14, 24 and 31 miles. The Brazos also has many sand bars and sandy beaches that make for great picnic spots or swim areas. While drifting down the river, it is not uncommon to see all types of wildlife like goats, deer, armadillos, foxes and even a rare glimpse of a Bald Eagle.

The main purpose of the North Texas Longhorn Breeders Association is to preserve and promote the Texas Longhorn breed and the fellowship of its members. Although they are based in the North Texas area, membership is open to all Longhorn lovers. Being a member of the association has its many advantages.  The association sponsors shows, seminars, field days and other activities and they are one of the largest and most active youth affiliates as well.

Listen up young ladies, if you’re just dying to get hold of a “real” cowboy, then this weekend at the North Texas Longhorn Cattle Show is the place for you.  Although the main attraction will certainly be the longhorn cattle, there should be plenty of cowboys in tight wranglers for that little touch of eye candy!!!!  There’s just something about a pearl snap shirt and a dirty pair of boots on a good lookin’ cowboy that makes smelling all that cattle worth while!
